Struggling with Bounce Back Loan Repayments? Your Options Explained | The Director’s Helpline

New survey findings from The Director's Helpline highlight the financial pressures many UK SMEs are currently facing, with construction and property businesses among the sectors most frequently seeking support.

The survey, based on responses from 403 UK business owners who completed our Business Health Check assessment, found that 76% of SMEs are unsure whether they can meet their financial commitments over the next month.

For many directors, concerns around cash flow have become an everyday challenge. Rising costs, existing debt, tax arrears, and economic uncertainty are creating difficult trading conditions across a range of sectors, particularly construction, hospitality, retail, and leisure.

Businesses are Trading, But Many Are Under Pressure

While 80% of respondents said their business is still actively trading, the data suggests many are operating without a comfortable financial cushion.

Only 24% said they were confident they could cover upcoming costs such as payroll, rent, and supplier payments. More than a third (35%) believe they are likely to miss payments in the coming weeks, while a further 32% described meeting their obligations as "tight".

This paints a picture of businesses continuing to operate, but often on a month-to-month basis with little room for unexpected costs or disruptions.

Debt and Tax Arrears Continue to Impact SMEs

Debt remains a significant concern for many business owners.

The survey found that 78% of directors have outstanding liabilities, with more than half owing over £25,000. Nearly four in ten respondents reported debts exceeding £50,000, while 6% said their business debt is now above £250,000.

Tax arrears are also contributing to financial strain. More than half of respondents (53%) said they have outstanding liabilities with HMRC, while only a third reported being fully up to date with payments overall.

For businesses already managing tight cash flow, unpaid tax liabilities can quickly become a serious issue if left unaddressed.

 Construction Businesses Face Ongoing Challenges

Construction and property businesses were among the sectors most commonly seeking support through The Director's Helpline.

The industry continues to face a number of challenges, including rising operating costs, delayed payments, labour shortages, and ongoing economic uncertainty. Many contractors and subcontractors are operating on tight margins, making them particularly vulnerable to cash flow disruption.

Late payments remain a longstanding issue throughout the construction supply chain, often creating pressure that can affect otherwise viable businesses.

The Human Impact on Directors

Financial pressure does not just affect a company's balance sheet. It also has a significant impact on the people responsible for running the business.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents (63%) said they feel stressed, overwhelmed, or close to burnout. Only 31% said they feel confident making important business decisions in the current economic climate.

Perhaps most concerning, more than half (52%) said they feel they are running their business alone, without sufficient support or guidance.

When directors are facing financial challenges, the weight of decision-making can become overwhelming, particularly when there is uncertainty about the options available.

Seeking Advice Early Makes a Difference

Commenting on the findings, Jonathan Cooper, Founder and Director of The Director's Helpline, said:

"The findings reflect a long-standing issue around access to timely, impartial advice when financial pressure begins to build.

What this data shows is that many directors are operating month to month under intense pressure. Most of these businesses are still trading, but without stability, clarity, or confidence about what comes next."

One of the most common themes we see is that directors often wait until problems reach a critical stage before seeking support. By that point, options may be more limited.

Seeking advice early can help business owners better understand their position, explore available solutions, and take practical steps to improve financial stability before issues escalate.

Looking Ahead

The survey findings underline the pressures currently facing UK SMEs, particularly in sectors such as construction and property.

While many businesses continue to trade successfully despite these challenges, the results highlight the importance of monitoring cash flow closely, addressing debt proactively, and seeking support when concerns begin to emerge.

Financial difficulties rarely appear overnight. Taking action early can often make the difference between a temporary setback and a more serious problem.
